9 Cool Photos Of Truman's Gutting Of The White House

The White House was built between 1792 and 1800, mainly by slaves and immigrants. Then the British ransacked it and lit it on fire in 1814. By 1948, the structure was in pretty bad shape. The bathtub was sinking into the floor and a piano leg even broke through the floor at one point. The house was declared to be in danger of collapse. So from 1949-1951, President Harry Truman moved to the Blair House and had the entire White House dismantled from the inside.
